On August 16th, Cathy Glynn stood up in the Back Room and walked us through something called 2PROAPT, and it has been rattling around in my head ever since. Several of you asked for the papers she handed out, and some of you weren't there and heard about it later. So here they are, and here's how it works.
What it is
2PROAPT is a way of reading Scripture that keeps you from skimming. It isn't a program and there's nothing to sign up for. It's a commitment you make with God, and God alone. The name is just the steps strung together, and the 2 out front is for the two P's.
Pray — Recognize who God is. Thank Him for at least three things. Ask forgiveness, receive it, and ask Him to guard your mind and help you hear what He wants you to hear.
Preview — Read the passage quickly, just to see the shape of it.
Read — Now read it slowly. What verse jumps out at you? Write it in the left column.
Observe — Who, what, where, when, why, how. What catches your attention? What questions come to mind? Middle column.
Application — How does this apply to my life? What is God saying to me? What have I learned about Him, or about myself? What does He want me to do, or not do? Right column.
Pray — Talk to God about what He just showed you. Thank Him for it, and ask for the courage and self-control to trust Him and obey.
Tell — Tell somebody. Share the bread God baked in your heart. And when you hear somebody else share, now you know how to pray for them.
How to use it
Give it thirty minutes a day if you can, and morning is best. Put the phone in another room and use an actual Bible. When you get the itch to go do this or that, say no and give the time to God.
Cathy was honest about one part, and I will be too: Application is where the enemy usually shows up. Fear, shame, the person sitting next to you, the squirrels running around in your head. Don't let any of it keep you from finishing.
Print the study form and fill in one page a day. Scripture and date at the top, how many minutes you're committing to, then the three columns. That's the whole thing.
The pages
2PROAPT — What It Is (the method, one page)
2PROAPT — Daily Study Form (print one for each day)
Thank you, Cathy, for bringing this to us. The method itself was developed, practiced, and taught by Pastor Chuck Miller, who is now with Jesus.
Start where you are. See you Sunday.
Pastor Barb
